‘Dragon Ball Super’ Teaser Trailer Reveals Goku’s New Transformation

The time has almost come, Dragon Ball fans. After a weekend away, Dragon Ball Super will return next week with a one-hour special. The anime is poised to pit Goku against Jiren at long last, and the battle will prompt Goku to take on a new transformation. And, now, you can get a peek at the hero’s change.

Toei Animation shared its episode preview for Dragon Ball Super not long ago, and the new clip gives a first-look at Goku’s transformation. The footage, which can be seen above, show Goku and Jiren fighting while the former is in his SSB form. The clip moves forward as Goku tries to launch a massive Spirit Bomb at Jiren, but the attack seems to fail. However, that is not the last trick Goku has up his sleeves.

As you can see, the clip ends with a stunning transformation. Jiren is seen widening his eyes as Goku powers up. A blinding flash of blue-white light then envelops the screen before Goku reappears with a new look. The hero is shown giving Jiren a cold look with some new silver eyes, and Goku’s hair also appears to be black and in his usual Super Saiyan style.

Dragon Ball Super will air the one-hour special on October 9, so fans can mark their calendars for the release. The anime’s return will consist of two back-to-back episodes, and Toei Animation brought in some stellar talent for the special. Yuya Takahashi, Naotoshi Shida, and Ken Otsuka will animate the episodes. The three artists are well known in the Dragon Ball fandom for their action-packed animation, so audiences can expect great things from the trio next weekend.

So far, there is no consensus on how Goku will reach his impending power-up, but fans do have plenty ideas. If you don’t mind taking off your tin-foil hat, you can read over some of the most popular theories below:

Transformation Theories

Anime lovers are no strangers to fan-theories, and the Dragon Ball fandom excels in the area. Dragon Ball Super has hinted at Goku’s upcoming transformation for months now, giving fans plenty of time to concoct their own theories about the hero’s power-up. The topic is still one that’s debated heavily, but two predominant fan-theories are managed to gain traction on the Internet already:

The first theory is that Goku’s new form has less to do with an internal power-up and more with a circumstantial boost. Fans know the Saiyan will use a massive Spirit Bomb against Jiren once he realizes his SSB and Kaio-Ken x20 technique don’t work on the Universe 11 fighter. Many have speculated Jiren will bounce the Spirit Bomb back at Goku thanks to his pure heart. If the attack is reflected, fan theorize Goku will then absorb the Spirit Bomb’s energy into himself and mix with this SSB ki to give him a brand-new transformation. 

If Spirit Bombs aren’t your thing, then the Dragon Ball Super fandom understands. Plenty of fans have questioned if Goku’s new transformation is more closely connected to the Kaio-Ken technique than they have expected. The Saiyan will max out his Kaio-Ken when he battles hit, so the attack will mix with his SSB aura. Audiences are starting to think the two techniques could mix somehow and mutate Goku’s ki. If that happens, the Saiyan would just be one emotional trigger away from unlock a new form, and Jiren is more than capable of stressing Goku out. 

Goku Has A Lot Of Transformations…

With Goku preparing to undergo a new transformation, Dragon Ball fans are taking a moment to look back at how many forms the Saiyan has under his belt. Ever since Goku went Super Saiyan back in Dragon Ball Z, the hero has unlocked plenty of canon (and non-canon) forms that would make Beerus pause.
