Seven New TV Series We’re Looking Forward To

From crazy new comedies to weird science fiction series, the fall television season has something for everyone.

Many of these television series will last only a few weeks, but a few could become the next new “can’t miss” show.

So which shows are worth watching?

ComicBook.com has poured through every new show debuting over the next two months and picked out some of the most promising shows.

With exciting premises and star-studded casts, these seven shows are the ones we think will be among the best new shows premiering this fall:

Son of Zorn

When an animated barbarian conqueror moves to real world California to reconnect to his wife and son, he discovers that adapting to suburbia is harder that defeating an army of mountain trolls. 

Son of Zorn stars Jason Sudeikis as Zorn, an animated strongman who’s an obvious parody of animated barbarians like He-Man or Zandor. In order to spend time with his non-animated son Alangulon (who goes by Alan), Zorn gets an apartment and a new job in California. However, Zon quickly discovers that working for Sanitation Solutions and trying to be a dad to a teenager are an entirely different set of challenges than slaying dragons.

Joining Sudeikis is Cheryl Hines as Zorn’s ex-wife Edie, Johnny Pemberton as Alan, and Phil Meadows as Edie’s new fiancee Craig. 

Son of Zorn premieres at 8:30 PM/7:30 PM 

 

Luke Cage

Since ABC cancelled Agent Carter and chose not to pick up Marvel’s Most Wanted, Marvel will only have two shows on TV this fall. In addition to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Netflix will also premiere the entire first season of Luke Cage on September 30th. 

Of all the Netflix series building towards The Defenders, Luke Cage might be the one we’re looking forward to the most. Mike Colter will reprise his role as Cage, who returns his home in Harlem looking to rebuild his life. While he’d prefer to keep a low profile, the machinations of Cottonmouth Stokes (Mahershala Ali) will force him to confront his past and take a more active role in his neighborhood.

Simone Missick will play longtime Marvel character Misty Knight in the new series, Alfre Woodard will play Mariah Dillard, and Rosario Dawson will reprise her Daredevil and Jessica Jones role of Claire Temple. 

Luke Cage debuts on Netflix on September 30th. 

The Good Place

What happens when a person winds up in heaven by accident? Kristen Bell (of Veronica Mars fame) plays Eleanor Shellstrop, a mediocre person sent to heaven because of a bureaucratic screw-up. As Eleanor struggles to fit in with her supposed soul mate and new heavenly neighbors, she needs to decide whether to keep up the ruse or try to find a way back to her average life. 

The Good Place has received strong early reviews, thanks in part to the performances of Bell and co-star Ted Danson (who’s been in everything from Cheers to CSI). It also helps that The Good Place‘s creator is Michael Schur, who also co-created Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. 

The Good Place premieres on September 19th at 8:30/7:30 Central on NBC. 

Pitch

Baseball has always made for great fictional drama, and Fox hopes that viewers will get behind Pitch, a new drama series about the first woman to play professional baseball. Kylie Dunbery stars as Ginny Baker, a rookie pitcher for the San Diego Padres. 

In addition to a powerful premise and a strong cast that includes Dunbery, Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Saved by the Bell, Franklin and Bash) and Ali Larter (Heroes), Pitch also benefits from a unique partnership between Fox and Major League Baseball. The show not only uses the San Diego Padres’ name and uniforms, it also had access to the team’s stadium and even filmed scenes during this year’s All-Star game. This sort of access and collaboration gives Pitch a sort of realism usually missing in sports shows and movies. 

Pitch debuts on September 22 at 9 PM/8 PM Central on Fox. 

Timeless

Supernatural creator Eric Kripke brings a new high concept science fiction drama called Timeless to NBC this fall. Timeless pairs up a scientist, a soldier, and a historian to stop a time-traveling criminal named Garcia Flynn from using a time machine to destroy the United States via its past. But between the unpredictable nature of tampering with the past and a possible hidden connection between Flynn and the team meant to stop them, there’s looks to be a lot more to Timeless than period costumes and new looks at famous moments in time.

Goran Visnjic stars as Flynn, while Abigail Spencer plays the historian leading the team sent to stop him. Malcolm Barrett (Lem from Better Off Ted) also stars as a black scientist who is hesitant about traveling through time due to America’s uncomfortable past with racism. 

Timeless premieres on October 3rd at 10 PM/9 PM central.  

The Exorcist

Recently, TV networks have looked to remaking movies as television shows in the hopes of recapturing the magic (and viewership) of the original work. In addition to a Lethal Weapon remake, Fox is also remaking the classic horror movie The Exorcist into a television series. 

The original Exorcist novel was loosely based on a famous exorcism that took place in 1949 in Maryland. While the novel and subsequent movie changed details and added characters to the event, the book is based on a supposedly true story documented by multiple institutions. The new television series places The Exorcist in the modern day, sprucing up the characters to give them more nuance and conflict. Still, this is probably one show that horror fans won’t want to miss.

The Exorcist debuts on September 23 at 9 PM/8 PM central. 

Conviction

With Agent Carter dead and buried, star Hayley Atwell will take on Conviction‘s lead role of Hayes Morrison, a former First Daughter coerced into leading a legal team specializing in re-examining cases where a person may have been wrongfully convicted. 

Atwell is joined by fellow superhero Shawn Ashmore and Walking Dead actress Emily Kinney, so this show has plenty of strong comic book television pedigree. In fact, most early reviews singled out Atwell’s strong and witty performance as the reason Conviction was “must watch” television. 

Conviction probably won’t be groundbreaking television, but it will be popular among people who miss either Agent Carter or the recently canceled ABC drama Castle.

Conviction premieres on October 3rd at 10 PM/9 PM central.
