Amazon’s reboot of The Tick will apparently be “darker” and “more grounded” than its precursor on FOX, according to executive producers for the series.

Before the pitchforks come out, it sounds like all they really mean is that they’re trying to take a more contemporary narrative approach to the series, which was really mostly one-and-done episodes back when it aired for nine episodes in 2001.

“We’ve got this show about superheroes [where] we get to have fun with the idea of superheroes by starting with kind of a comedic parody of [an] event-oriented-like universe,” creator (and Gotham writer) Ben Edlund told EW. “It will be darker and more grounded. And it’s going to have a real story, a real hero’s myth. We’re the ones that get to have fun with it and that’s kind of the situation where right now that’s an open field in this area of entertainment.”

The series will return via Amazon’s pilot program, and if the pilot sufficiently impresses audiences, the show will go to series. EW speculates that the series’ long-running cult following will help it survive, but of course a hardcore fan with their own idea of what a show should be can be a liability as much as a blessing — which Amazon itself learned with Zombieland.
