Henry Cavill – and his facial hair – were a huge topic of conversation for DC fans earlier this year. But it sounds like things were not as complicated behind the scenes of Justice League.

During a recent interview with Fox 5 DC’s Kevin McCarthy, Cavill revealed the process that went into digitally removing his mustache during Justice League‘s reshoots. As the actor revealed, the goal wasn’t to conceal the mustache on camera, but to make it easier to digitally remove it later on.

“It’s nothing to cover it up.” Cavill explained. “What we do is we try to put it back on the top lip as much as possible. So they kind of wax it up. And then I had dots all over my face. And they try to put dots, which are barely visible, sort of in the various points on the face where you would see them during normalโ€ฆ not face replacement, but whatever CGI aspect they may be applying to a face. And yeah. I was covered in dots, and had a big mustache. It was definitely a new look for Superman.”

Cavill’s mustache first came to fans’ attention in July of this year, when Justice League entered its reshoots. As Cavill explained, he wasn’t able to shave the mustache because of his role in Mission Impossible 6, a sentiment that director Chris McQuarrie supported.

The topic of #MustacheGate was quickly explored by fans, sparking plenty of fanart and a whole lot of theorizing. According to some reports, it would cost millions of dollars to erase the facial hair in post. While it’s unclear exactly how involved the process ending up being, Cavill seems to have an optimistic outlook on it, something he shares with Justice League co-star Ben Affleck.
