The DC Films Universe (or DC Extended Universe) has hit its fair share of speed bumps while trying to get itself off the ground and established, with harsh critical reviews, divisive fan opinion, and a lot of creative shakeups in the last year alone.

It’s those creative shakeups that have us looking over the confirmed DCEU release date slate again:

  • Wonder Woman โ€“ June 2017.
  • Justice League โ€“ Part One โ€“ Nov. 2017.
  • The Flash โ€“ March 2018.
  • Aquaman โ€“ December 2018.
  • Shazam!– 2019
  • Justice League โ€“ Part Two โ€“ June 2019.
  • Cyborg โ€“ April 2020.

The issue is: With The Flash losing its director and creative momentum, the film isn’t making its scheduled release date (it’s currently on backburner being retooled). That loss leaves a considerable gap between DCEU films, and word is that DC Films is shooting another film in 2017 – one that could fill in the release date hole.

That news now has fans wondering: What Movie Can DC Films Fit Between Justice League and Aquaman?

It’s not The Batman

Likeย The Flash, The Batmanย has hit a creative speed bump in the last few months. The film was slated to be directed by Batman actor Ben Affleck – but he dropped out of that responsibility, preferring to simply star, instead. Eventually a new diretor was found in the form of Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) – but as of latest reports,ย The Batmanย won’t start production until 2018.ย

Ifย The Batmanย isn’t starting production until 2018, then it can’t possibly be released in 2018. There’s been word all along that part of the creative troubles surroundingย The Batmanย were related to DC Films wanting to rush the film into production early this year; could the studio have been trying to fill that 2018 gap? Probably.ย

Gotham City Sirens

If notย The Batman, then maybe some of his rogues?ย

Gotham City Sirens is set to bringย Suicide Squad‘s Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) into her own spinoffย franchise, which will be directed byย Suicide Squad‘s David Ayer.

Ayerย already knows (all too well) the stresses of a DC Film production timeline, and he and Margot Robbie can get back into the swing of things quicker than, say, a new director and star, coming together for the first time.ย

With Ayerย already teasing otherย Sirensย heroines like Catwomanย and Poison Ivy, and potential villains like Black Mask, it seems there are enough pieces floating into place to getย Gothamย City Sirensย into production sooner, before later. That “sooner” could easily be summerย of 2017, with plenty of time to get the film out in theaters by spring 2018.ย

It’s our most likely bet.ย

Shazam/Black Adam

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been circling the DCEUย for some time now, as fans have wondered where he would finally land in its ranks. It was confirmed months ago that Johnson is indeed playing Shazamย nemesis Black Adam as long suspected – but in a twist, fans learned that Black Adam might also be getting his own spinoffย film.ย

There’s been talk that Shazam!ย could move up it’s release date from 2019, and a director is reportedly in talks to helm the picture. Whether we get theย Shazam!ย film first, or theย Black Adam spinoff, Johnson is definitely the sort of franchise movie professional who can turn out a blockbuster movie quickly.ย

The Flash

We supposeย The Flashย movie could bounce back, creatively, after the loss ofย Dopeย director Rick Famuyiwaย and get itself into production during late 2017. The film got a script rewrite at the beginning of the year, and stars Ezra Miller and Kierseyย Clemonsย are still in the swing of theirย Justice Leagueย commitments.ย

Personally, we think it’s only a matter of time before we get confirmation thatย The Flashย has been pushed back; but until then, it’s stillย Possbileย that Barry Allen could dash into theaters by October 2018.ย

He’s The Flash, after all: if anyone can make it in time, it’s him.ย

Green Lantern Corps

Green Lantern Corps. seemed like it was a long ways off just a few months ago; but since that time, there’s been rapid advancement in its development.ย

We got a story and character premise (Hal Jordan and John Stewart as our GLs), as well as rumors of casting. We also have started hearing that the Green Lanterns could show up sooner than we thought – as soon asย Justice League. Most recently we heard thatย Green Lantern Corps is possibly courting a director.ย

All that forward momentum raises the question: Is DC/WB hoping to now useย Green Lantern Corpsย as itsย big 2018 movie?ย
