Two supergroups are colliding in the pages of Justice League vs Suicide Squad #1, even if Simon Baz doesn’t think too highly of Captain Boomerang’s skills. Unfortunately for the two teams, there is another player in the shadows with an agenda all their own.

The book opens with a mysterious subject infiltrating the Catacombs prison that holds some of the worst villains in the DC Universe. Of course, the term infiltrating is maybe a little misleading as he’s not the most subtle in his work. In fact, he prefers to have others do the dirty work for him.

If that sounds familiar it should, as that mysterious character is none other than Maxwell Lord. Lord has been awol since DC’s Rebirth initiative began but makes his grand return here. He frees a number of longtime DC villains from their ongoing purgatory and gathers them all in one location for a singular purpose, and that’s to kill Amanda Waller.

When the group asks “what’s in it for you?”, Lord says “Me? I’m going to save the world.” The key thing to take away from this is that he is seen wiping the blood away from his nose here, which indicates that he is at least attempting to use his abilities. Lord has the talent of extreme mind control, a skill he’s used in the past to great effect on both heroes and villains. His nose starts to bleed when uses it, though, and he starts to bleed even more if he expands it to more than one person.

It’s rather light here, so it seems he’s maybe only controlling one or two members of the group at the moment, but it will remain to be seen who those are and if he can maintain over the course of the story.
