For the second-half of the third season, after traveling to the future and witnessing her death, The Flash and his team were determined to change Iris’s fate. However, because Savitar is actually Barry Allen’s time remnant, he was always one step ahead of them.
And all seemed lost in the penultimate episode, as The Flash wasn’t able to prevent Savitar from murdering Iris. However, during a flashback sequence in the finale, we learn that H.R. used his transmogrifier to take her place. So it was actually H.R. that was stabbed by Savitar.
As for Savitar’s death, after The Flash knocks him out of his armored suit, destroys it, and passes up the chance to his evil lookalike, the villain tries to sneak up behind The Flash for one final attack. Just before the temporal duplicate can get to him, a gunshot rings out. Irish has shot and killed Savitar.
“Savitar’s our big bad, Team Flash is trying to stop Savitar, and these are the final moments. I remember Andrew Kreisberg coming to me and telling me how it would all kind of go down in the end,” Patton says in the video above, “and I remember saying to him: ‘That is so cool. Young girls and young boys everywhere are going to be thrilled with her being the one to kind of take that final shot at Savitar.’ It’s empowering, it’s empowering that Iris, whose kinda been this damsel [in distress] all season and kind of struggled with Savitar looming over her, she’s the one that has the final say in his last breath.”
With nothing left to lose, Barry (Grant Gustin) takes on Savitar (also Grant Gustin) in an epic conclusion to season three.
David McWhirter directed the episode written by Aaron Helbing & Todd Helbing.
