There's no denying the awe-inspiring success of Wonder Woman. Earlier this month, Warner Bros. ushered the heroine into theaters for her first live-action standalone. The film has since become one of the most critically praised in DC Entertainment's history, and fans still want more. So far, there are no official plans to bring Wonder Woman back for a sequel, but it is only a matter of time until Warner Bros. gives the go-ahead. And, now, new rumors are suggesting the company is looking to bring in another female lead to play opposite of Gal Gadot.
Recently, a reported slate of 'leaked' DCEU news reached the Internet courtesy of 4chan. As reported by We Got This Covered, the write-ups nod to Wonder Woman 2 seems to have piqued the interest of fans. The rumor's original source claims that Wonder Woman 2 is all but a "done deal" given its massive international box office gross. And, when it comes to villains, executives are contemplating two familiar names.
"The main villain hasn't been decided but Cheetah and Circe have been discussed," the report reads. "The studio will most likely attempt to cast a big female lead to oppose Gal Gadot."
Of course, none of these supposed leaks have been confirmed by any official party. Still, fans have speculated for some time about Warner Bros. and its plans for female supervillains. Before Wonder Woman confirmed it would be telling Diana's origin story, many had hoped the film would see Cheetah as its main antagonist. It would not be too shocking to see Wonder Woman 2 rope in the vixen instead or even drop Circe into the mix.
If you are not familiar with either Cheetah or Circe, then you have a bit to catch up on. Cheetah is one of Wonder Woman's most popular foes. The character's most recent iteration can be found in Barbara Ann Minerva, a former archaeologist who is cursed by an ancient totem to become a devilish half-woman, half-cat monstrosity.
As for Circe, the name should ring a bell for fans who have dabbled with Greek mythology. The DC Universe's take on Circe sees the vixen become a witch who has a grudge against the Amazon. Circe would be a formidable villain for Wonder Woman to face as she upgrades many of the heroine's foes, and Cheetah could always benefit from pledging allegiance to the whacked-out sorceress.
So, what do you think? Is there any merit in putting stock into the Wonder Woman 2 rumors, or do you hope the sequel goes an entirely different route with its villains? Hit us up on Twitter @ComicBook to let us know!
