As the world launches into Monster Hunter fever following the announcement of Monster Hunter XX coming to Switch, we’re preparing for another promising HD monster hunting experience: Dauntless. Dauntless is a co-op action RPG being developed by Phoenix Labs for the PC, and it’s scheduled to launch this year. A new trailer debuted today showing off a new Behemoth, new weapon type, and a little more about progression and combat. You can watch it above.

Much like Monster Hunter, Dauntless will appeal to groups of friends who are looking to team up together and work on strategies to take down these hulking, dangerous beasts. Every Behemoth has its own unique abilities, attack animations, and stages of aggression which will challenge players in unpredictable ways. If you’re going to succeed, you’re going to have to work together, and you’re going to have to equip the best gear available to you.

Of course, slaying Behemoths is perhaps the best way to upgrade your gear. Here we find that same infinitely gratifying progression loop that makes the Monster Hunter series so notoriously addictive. Hunt monster; slay monster; collect monster hides and parts; take your spoils to local blacksmith; get new weapons and armor made from the parts of the monster you just killed; go hunt a bigger, badder monster.

You’d think the pattern would eventually wear out avid fans, but it never does. The thrill of new loot, new beasts, and new adventures with friends is always more than enough to keep us coming back, and we’re looking forward to Dauntless offering the same types of thrills.

We were able to go hands-on with Dauntless at PAX East, and we walked away really impressed by what we played. You can read our preview right here. If you’d like to go hands-on with the game for yourself, then you can go ahead and sign up for the alpha right here.
