The ongoing lore updates in League of Legends have confirmed that Varus is a Darkin, but it appears that this detail of his story was released ahead of schedule.

Part of the notes for Patch 7.23 explained that short bios would soon be created and altered for most of the champions and would be readable in the client. Varus's tragic story received a complete overhaul by the looks of it, the champion having a new bio that confirms suspicions that he's a member of the mysterious Darkin race. The theories have been around for a while and heated up even more with the release of another Darkin, Kayn, but his new bio that's been sighted and can be read below confirms the idea while altering Varus' story in a big way.

"One of the ancient race of darkin, Varus was a deadly killer who loved to torment his foes, driving them almost to insanity before delivering the killing arrow. He was imprisoned at the end of the Darkin War, but escaped centuries later in the remade flesh of two Ionian hunters—they had unwittingly released him, cursed to bear the bow containing his bound essence. Varus now seeks out those who trapped him in order to enact his brutal vengeance, but the mortals' souls within him still resist every step of the way."

Those well-versed in League lore will know that this is a stark difference from his current story that depicts him as an Ionian archer who delves into sinister power to take revenge on Noxus for killing his fallen Ionians. The lore didn't sit well with some readers due to his character taking a complete 180, but one Rioter stepped in to promise that this release was accidental and that there's more info on the way.

"I'm with the team behind this update to Varus, and this was a very accidental early release (PBE, d'oh)," said Riot DyQuill. Totally get how jarring this is, and I promise there's major context coming. - as in, significantly more than just this bio."

DyQuill went on to explain that the full narrative was to be released on Nov. 30 with the final touches being put on it now, so expect to see it then if not sooner after this early reveal.
