One of 2019’s Biggest RPGs is Getting a New Game (And You Don’t Have to Wait Much Longer)

2019 was a stacked year for video games, and regardless of which genre you happen to prefer, there was something directly up your alley. Whether we’re talking major franchise releases like Kingdom Hearts 3 and Pokémon Sword and Shield, new franchise starters like Control and Death Stranding, or maybe something completely off the wall like Untitled Goose Game, there were plenty of choices. That said, for fans of RPGs and immersive storytelling, there was one game that managed to stand out from that already impressive lineup, and now it’s getting a new game, though the best news is that you don’t even have to wait too much longer to play it.

In 2019, fans were introduced to the Bergson family in Dead Mage and 11 bit studios’ hit RPG roguelike Children of Morta, and ever since its initial release on PC and consoles, it has grown to become even more beloved. The franchise is now getting its newest addition in the form of Children of Morta: The Board Game from Lucky Duck Games, which announced that the retail release will hit stores around November.

What Is Children of Morta?

If you didn’t get a chance to play the original Children of Morta, the game follows the Bergson family, who have the tall task of acting as guardians of Mount Morta. Their lives are thrown into chaos when a sudden event corrupts not only the mountain but the God at the center of it, which turns all of the mountain’s creatures into monsters.

To get to the bottom of what happened and fix it, the Bergson family has to find the seeds of life and cleanse the corruption from the mountain, and you’ll lead John, Linda, Kevin, Mark, and Lucy through that challenging journey as you take out enemies in thrilling moment to moment gameplay either on your own or with a friend in co-op.

From Video Game to Tabletop

In Children of Morta: The Board Game, you’ll explore the realm of Rea and attempt to discover the source of the corruption so you can heal the land. To do so, you’ll choose from a set of different heroes just like in the original game, and each one will have their own play style and a host of abilities. There’s also a layer of strategy in how you utilize your skill tokens on your character’s hero board, but the game really shines in the cooperative play.

In the board game, there are several things going on that connect all of the players, including everyone sharing rage as a resource. While you can use rage to boost your actions, you will need to communicate with the rest of your team in the best way to use it so that the team has it available when it’s needed most.

While you will level up your individual heroes, there’s also a way to level up the family as a whole through a shared skill bag. As you collect Morvs you will unlock new tokens for all heroes, and you can then upgrade the shared bag of skills to improve the abilities at hand for the whole family. There’s also the option to use support cards, which contain unique tasks that, once used, will earn support tokens. Those support tokens can then form a unique bond between family members and make them even stronger, so there are a number of ways to level up your party.

There’s a full story mode that allows for permanent character upgrades, but you can also jump in with the resetting Family Trials just to have some fun. The game is also made to be flexible, so even if you start the story mode with a certain number of players, you can weave new players in quickly and catch them up ability-wise through the shared bag, or adapt the game if a player needs to step away for the time being.

Children of Morta: The Board Game looks to have captured a lot of what charmed fans about the original game, and it is headed to retail release this November.
