We're just a few days away from being able to indulge in old-school goodness with Sonic Mania on various consoles, but for now, we've got a neat taste of what lies ahead with the adventure with a sneak peek at the opening animation for the game.

Posted on the Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account today, the full animation sequences features Sonic the Hedgehog, alongside Tails the Fox (Miles Prower) and Knuckles the Echidna as they make their way up an elevator and start running through a series of levels based on ones from the game, including the Studiopolis zone that was introduced in a playable demo months ago.

The difference is, though, that the entire opening sequence is done with traditional animation, and looks like something out of an old-school Sonic anime. At first we're just introduced to the main heroes of the game, but it's not too long before Dr. Robotnik and several of his allies show up to wreak havoc – the robo-cronies that work alongside him as they attempt to grab the beloved Chaos Emeralds for themselves.

The intro can be seen above, and it's a lot of fun – and it totally sets the mood for the full game, which we'll be reviewing next week.

Sonic Mania will release on August 15th for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC and Nintendo Switch.
