We’ve seen some great Grand Theft Auto V mods come out over the years, including ones devoted to Rick and Morty, Back To the Future and other franchises – despite Take Two’s best attempts to shut them down. Now, a devoted team of modding masters are about to take the familiar hijinks we’ve come to expect from the game and throw them out of the window, as they’ll soon be introducing the most ambitious mod yet – outer space.

Yep, the team is working on GTA Space, where players will be able to take to a space shuttle and hit the open galaxy, as they take on enemy aliens, land on other planets for exploration and take on a number of missions – four in all – when the mod is ready to launch.

The team has a lot planned for this ambitious mod, though it’s still very much a work in progress. It’s working very hard on the game’s physics, mission system and scene creator, as well as secondary DLC packs and other miscellany features, like the ability to repair your vehicle while in space, and overrideable weather and time, in case you feel like changing things up a bit.

It did release a trailer, which you can see above, and it really sets the stage for what the mod is preparing to do, with massive space vessels looming overhead and the promise of a much bigger universe than even the team at Rockstar Games could’ve planned.

That said, you could be waiting a bit. The team noted that the mod will only be released “when we think the mod is ready,” and a lot of “frequently” placed work is being placed into it. There’s a lot on the team’s plate here, so needless to say, they don’t want to release it until everything is just about right with it.

But, man, what a bold idea. It almost makes us wish we had an official Grand Theft Auto Space spin-off of some sort from Rockstar, though it obviously wants to keep the series grounded. In the meantime, watch the trailer above, and dream of a universe that’s well worth exploring!

Grand Theft Auto V is available now for PC, as well as Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
