Monsters are taking over TV!

On Friday, Deadline announced that Gareth Edwards' sci-fi horror film Monsters was being turned into a TV series by Vertigo Films, to air on Channel 4 in the UK.

If you're not familiar with the film, Monsters was Edwards' debut directorial effort starring Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able, and told the story of two people trying to get through the "infected" zone of Mexico, six years after an alien invasion.

The 2010 film was an indie hit, and helped propel Edwards into the Hollywood spotlight. The director was soon put at the helm of Godzilla, which was released in 2014. He followed that up with his most notable work to-date, 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

According to Deadline's report, Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett will act as showrunner for the Monsters TV adaptation, with up-and-coming writers Daniel Fajemisin-Duncan and Marlon Smith penning the script. While Channel 4 is attached to the show in the UK, the producers are currently searching for a major U.S. partner to distribute the series stateside. The project is said to be in talks with various broadcasters and streaming services, such as Netflix and Amazon.

Channel 4 currently has another co-production with Amazon, the Philip K. Dick adaptation, Electric Dreams. The relationship built with that big-budget sci-fi series could potentially pave the way for Monsters to land on the same service.

Edwards' involvement with the series has yet to be officially revealed. The report says that he is likely to be involved behind the scenes, with his full involvement determined when the project is greenlit.
