Emma Frost Leads X-Men Against Hydra In Secret Empire: United

Marvel Comics has revealed another upcoming Secret Empire tie-inSecret Empire: United, written by Jim Zub (Thunderbolts) with art by Ario Anindito (Uncanny Inhumans, Venom: Space Knight). Secret Empire: United sees Captain America taking on a united opposition.

“Secret Empire: United shows us both levels of Hydra’s orchestrated takeover; ground level conflict between ideologies and high level machinations by those in power,” said Zub in a press release. “It’s a super-powered thriller with twisted Avengers, X-Men, and Hydra all jockeying for their place in the new world that emerges from Secret Empire.”

In Secret Empire: Underground, “While the country cowers in obedient fear of the oligarchy of Hydra’s High Council, Steve Rogers revels in the peace he’s finally brought to his planet. But when a contingent of mutants, led by Emma Frost, stokes the fires of rebellion in New Tian, the mutant-controlled territory of the United States, Steve’s leadership is called into question. So the supreme leader takes to the front lines to face down those who would dare oppose beginning with the White Queen herself!”

“Cultures clash as mutantkind confronts the new face of Hydra but, behind their unified front, Steve Rogers and the High Council of Hydra are playing a deadly game where disloyalty means death and no one can be trusted,” continued Zub.

Secret Empire: United joins other one-shots like Secret Empire: Uprising and Secret Empire: Underground in telling vignettes from the era of Secret Empire that are being billed as integral to the overall story of Secret Empire.

It should be interesting to see how Emma Frost is depicted in Secret Empire: United after her epic heel turn in Inhumans vs. X-Men #6. To see her leading a band of X-Men, no matter how ragtag, after the amount of damage she did through the events of Death of X and Inhumans vs. X-Men will be a bit of a shock to the system.

The last we saw Emma Frost, she was donning a new supervillain costume complete with a helmet that looked like a mashup of Magneto and Cyclops’ favored headgear. Her new role in the world of mutants in the ResurrXion era has yet to be defined, so Secret Empire: United may offer some clues. Is Emma resisting Hydra outright, or is she biting the hand that feeds her after being given corrupt power by Captain America?

There’s also the question of who would ally themselves with Emma after IvX to comprise her X-Men team. We’ll find out when Secret Empire: Uprising goes on sale May 22, 2017.
