A new featurette for Thor: Ragnarok lays out the threat posed by the villain.

“Hela is the goddess of death and I’ve had incredible fun playing her,” Blanchett says.

“Hela’s the first female villain that we’ve had in a Marvel film and Cate has destroyed the idea of your typical villain,” director Taika Waititi adds.

“I loved working with Cate Blanchett,” star Chris Hemsworth says. “I was so excited to see what she was going to do with Hela. She has this insane, off-kilter attitude.”

Blanchett and Waititi go on to explain how Hela’s motivations help make her a great villain.

“I think the best villain are always those that you kind of love and hate what they do, but you sort of understand it,” Blanchett says. “There’s a logic to it.

“She wants to come back home and be accepted and she wants what’s hers,” Waititi says.

For Blanchett, some of the joy of playing Hela has been in the quiet moments, which usually involves a bit of violence.

“Some of the happiest times have been beating people up,” Blanchett admits. “I’ve really enjoyed it like, ‘I don’t have to speak today,’ and I can just throw axes into someone’s gut. That’s been good.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Hela takes much of its inspiration from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s classic creation. However, this version of Hela also blends in bits of a much newer villain, Gorr the God-Butcher from Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic’s Thor: God of Thunder series.
