New Logan Deleted Scene Shows Caliban's Death

Hugh Jackman's final performance as Wolverine was one of the most stunning superhero films to date, and arguably the character's best cinematic appearance over 17 years of movies.

The James Mangold-directed Logan told a clear and concise story about a man struggling against his own personal nature, running away from fate, and finally coming to terms with responsibility. It was a great film with an amazing cast of characters, not limited to Dafne Keen as Laura, Patrick Stewart as Xavier, and Stephen Merchant as Caliban.

Though the character met a grisly end in the film's second act, sacrificing himself in order to get back at his captors and give his allies a fighting chance to escape the same fate, Logan didn't actually show the character die — just a van exploding while he was trapped inside.

A new deleted scene from the film shows a much darker version of the death. Courtesy of Games Radar, the scene shows Logan rescuing the restrained Laura after his battle with the cloned X-24, walking away from the chaos of the farmhouse.

As he walks away, he hears a commotion across the yard emanating near the wreckage of the van. When Logan examines, he sees Caliban crawling across the ground, brutally wounded from the explosion.

The two lock eyes for a moment. Then Caliban collapses.

Logan was already a bleak movie, but this would have made it even more so. The opening scene portrayed the two as an odd couple, both working together as a means to an end, but once Caliban was taken captive Logan didn't resort to heroics to rescue him. He essentially abandoned him, a point this scene drives home.

While it is a powerful moment, it would have messed up the pacing of the film as that moment with Xavier's death put Logan further down the path of acceptance. Ultimately, that would have been a sobering and unneeded reminder of his own cowardice at a late stage in the film.

Logan is out now on Digital HD and will release on Blu-ray on July 10.
