Next year will mark one important anniversary for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iron Man kicked off the franchise back in 2018, so 2018 will ring in the MCU’s 10th anniversary with the release of Avengers: Infinity War. However, fans are growing concerned that the franchise will upend itself by the time Avengers 4 hits theaters.

However, if you were to ask James Gunn about the reboot possibility, the director wouldn’t seem convinced.

Recently, a fan asked Gunn on Twitter whether rumors about the MCU being rebooted post-Avengers 4 were true. The director answered bluntly, writing, “No true. The Guardians, at least, will continue on.”

Not too long after, another Marvel fans replied and jokingly asked if Secret Wars might be the ‘change’ that Kevin Feige recently alluded to. Gunn answered, “Nice try. But no. Not sure what a ‘soft reboot’ is though” before confirming the Guardians will remain the same ones the MCU has been toting around.

Rumors began floating that the MCU would reboot itself after Avengers 4 short after Marvel Studios’ president did an interview with Collider. Feige sat down to talk about the franchise’s future, and he admitted he didn’t know how the MCU would be structured in the wake of Avengers 4.

“Certainly as we get to Infinity War there is a sense of a climax if not a conclusion to, by the time we’re at untitled Avengers 4, the 22 movies that will have encompassed the first three phases of the MCU,” Feige explained. “And what happens after that will be very different. I don’t know if it’s Phase 4, it might be a new thing.”

There’s no doubt that the MCU will need to adapt to survive another ten years in Hollywood. The franchise is a wholly unique one, and Marvel Studios will navigate uncharted waters when it comes to recasting major roles and tying in peripheral storylines. There’s no immediate danger of the MCU doing a total turnaround as it has Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy to drive it forward. But, for some character, Avengers 4 may mark their final hurrah into the land of all thing superheroes.
