The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one that is in constant flux. From release dates to new castings, something is always being tweaked behind behind-the-scenes. This year, the MCU will enter a brand-new phase as films like Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok make their way into theaters. And, of course, the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy will land into cinemas too. The rowdy superhero flick was a bonafide hit when it debuted years ago, and it is still a top contender for Marvel Studios.

But, if you thought a third Guardians of the Galaxy film was already in the works, then you need to think again.
Recently, fans began clamoring over the franchise’s future after an interview with director James Gunn hit the Internet. While speaking with Complex, the man said that a third film would be happening for sure. Now, Gunn is taking time to clarify the claim and telling fans nothing had been confirmed for a third film.
Speaking to Yahoo, Gunn said, “There are no specific plans for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.“
“But we know unless something goes horribly โ which is always possibly, you never know โ I think that Marvel would want to make another movie. [Marvel chief] Kevin Feige a year-and-a-half ago said, ‘Yeah, one of our things that we’d be thinking about will be a Guardians 3.’”
For the moment, Gunn isn’t even sure what his involvement with the third film would look like. The director has spent several years working on the sequel already, and Gunn wants to figure out whether a big-budget movie is the right project for him to pursue next.
“I’m just trying to figure out what I’m going to do with the next three years of my life. I love making big movies, that’s my thing. It’s not about wanting to go back and tell the story of a diseased toe for $5,000. I would like to make another big movie,” Gunn hedged.
“So is that Vol. 3 or not? Is that the thing I’d want to do next or not? I don’t know, we’re talking about it. We’re figuring things out. And we’ll see where it goes. I’m excited about where the Guardians are gonna go, I’m excited about what they can do, and I have a thousand ideas for where the characters would go and the things they would do and what would happen next.”
Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
