While Steve Rogers might be working for the other side these days, he's shown to be anything but a follower under the current Hydra regime. Writer Nick Spener and Jesus Saiz always seem to subvert expectations in this book, and in Steve Rogers: Captain America #7, that trend continues with a surprising result.

Spoilers from here on out, so be warned.

In issue #7, Rogers and his lone ally Dr. Eric Selvig meet to go over their plans for Hydra, including the removal of their current leader Red Skull. When we say "go over their plans", that mostly equates to Dr. Selvig saying constantly how this plan will never work, and Cap continuously attempting to put him at ease.

As the two go over the preposterous nature of their current predicament, it's made clear that the road to dethroning Red Skull is rather treacherous. Not only do they have to manipulate several groups and leaders into wounding themselves, but they also have to do so against an enemy that can literally read their minds. For those who forgot, the Red Skull now has Charles Xavier's powers of telepathy, but so far Rogers has been able to circumvent his newfound mental prowess by staying just far enough out of his range.

As Selvig tells him they need more people to make this work, Cap reveals another piece on the chessboard, which has been behind the secured door that he told him never to open a few issues ago. He agrees to show Selvig what's inside, and it turns out to be none other than Baron Zemo, who is conspicuously alive and well in a cell.

You'd be forgiven for thinking Helmut Zemo's superpower was just staying alive, as the villain is constantly able to live through just about anything. The last time Zemo was seen, he and Dr. Selvig, who he had kidnapped from the remains of Pleasant Hill, were attempting to put together a new Masters of Evil. Captain America broke up the initiation, along with Jack Flag and Free Spirit. During the ensuing conflict, Cap and Zemo battled on Zemo's plane, where Cap needed saving from Jack Flag. This was where Cap ultimately revealed himself to be working for Hydra, as after Flag knocked Zemo unconscious Cap threw Flag out of the plane. He then took Selvig and had the plane fly into a building, seemingly killing Zemo.

Of course, Cap had orders to kill Selvig as well and decided not to, so some probably saw this coming. It will be interesting to see these two sworn enemies working together towards a common goal, but who knows how long that might last, if it gets started at all.

Steve Rogers: Captain America #7 is in stores now.
