Mild spoilers for The Punisher below.
Marvel dropped The Punisher on Netflix less than 24 hours ago, but some fans have already made their way through the 13-episode season — and they're wondering what's next for Marine Corps veteran turned gun-toting vigilante Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal).
"No, I genuinely don't know how the Netflix system works with making those calls, and I assume once they do [make a call] they'll tell Marvel and Marvel will tell me and we'll jump back to it," Lightfoot said. "But I'm very excited to do so. I think we left both Frank and Billy in places where there are so many ways to jump off from if that second season comes. We can do anything with them, in truth."
The latest show to emerge out of the TV-MA corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Punisher has received a generally favorable response from critics. With a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, The Punisher trails Luke Cage (95%), Jessica Jones (92%) and Daredevil (86%), but is far ahead of Iron Fist (17%), which is forging ahead with a sophomore season despite being the only "rotten" series to come out of the Marvel and Netflix partnership.
While we're not privy to how or why Netflix makes the calls for renewals, it's likely the fan-favorite Punisher will follow suit with the other Marvel/Netflix series and won't be a one-and-done: Daredevil (now filming its third season), Jessica Jones (which recently wrapped filming its second season), Luke Cage (now filming its second season) and Iron Fist (filming its second season in December) all received follow up seasons, so fans should expect Castle to be back in action sooner than later.
All episodes of The Punisher are now streaming on Netflix.
