Wolverine 3 Director Addresses Mr. Sinister Reports

If you didn’t know who Mr. Sinister was before this week, then you have probably at least heard his name by now. The famous X-Men villain made headlines following the release of X-Men: Apocalypse since producers Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg said the character would appear in Wolverine 3. But, if you ask the film’s director, he’s never heard of the sinister fellow.

James Mangold took to Twitter and responded to the rumors. The director tweeted out the message, “Uh. Who is Mister Sinister? Sounds kinda corny. Please advise,” prompting to fans to question whether James was trolling them or not.

Those fans only grew more confused as the director continued his social media spree. Responding to a fan, James said, “I hear he’s [Mr. Sinister] in my movie. Going back to cutting room to look for him.”

The director then remarked it was “kinda funny kinda funny how a hundred media “news” outlets think a DVD commentary is a source for news headlines.”

However, fans felt pretty confident about the DVD commentary considering who was speaking on the on the track. Since Bryan and Simon are producers on the film, many expect those two to know more about the film’s ensemble cast than most.

There’s also the issue of the post-credit scene in X-Men: Apocalypse to consider. At the end of the film, there is a scene that teases the existence of Nathaniel Essex who’s better known by his alias, Mr. Sinister. In the footage, a group of well-dressed men enter the now abandoned Weapon X facility at Alkali Lake and retrieve a vial of Wolverine’s blood. One man is seen storing the item in a briefcase that has a metal ‘Essex Corp’ embellishment on it, indicating that the shady crew is from a corporation owned by Mr. Sinister.

After seeing the clip, many simply assumed the villain would make an appearance in Wolverine 3 as a main villain. However, the film’s director is now calling that assumption into question.

Of course, James could be bluffing with his statements in order to hype attention for Wolverine 3. The third and final solo flick starring Hugh Jackman as the grumpy mutant has been shrouded in secrecy since it was announced. The film wrapped principal photography earlier this summer, leaving James and his team to edit a theatrical cut of Wolverine 3. It is likely that James wants to keep the film’s secrets on the down-low until he’s ready to premiere footage.

Just a few days ago, the director tweeted and told fans they’ll be able to “hear and see things very soon.” So, who knows? Fans might get confirmation as to who the big baddie in Wolverine 3 will be once its first trailer drops?

The film stars Hugh Jackman (X-Men: Days of Future Past) as Logan/Wolverine and Patrick Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation) as Charles Xavier/Professor X. The cast also includes Boyd Holbrook (Gone Girl), Richard E. Grant (Game of Thrones), Stephen Merchant (Movie 43), Eriq La Salle (ER), Elise Neal (Scream 2), and Elizabeth Rodriguez (Orange is the New Black).

Wolverine 3 is set for a March 3, 2017 release from 20th Century Fox.
