The Mummy‘s second full trailer gave fans a big glimpse at how she is unearthed from her tomb as well as the significant damage she can unleash. It’s still a mystery though as to how Tom Cruise‘s Nick Morton figures into the plot, and another mystery is how the Mummy’s powers actually work.

Director Alex Kurtzman recently spoke to USA Today about the project and revealed a few new pieces of information, including the theme of her powers. Kurtzman says her powers are “organized around the ideas of romance and entrancement. She has control over and power to get into your mind, and creepy crawlies tend to like her when she’s around.” That could explain why Cruise’s eyes are seen morphing in the most recent trailer and could be a temporary effect while under her control.

Kurtzman also spoke about Russell Crowe’s character and his relationship to Nick, saying he is an entry point to “a much larger world of gods and monsters he (Nick) wasn’t aware of.”

The Mummy currently has a 3.28 out of 5 on ComicBook.com’s anticipation rankings, and you can view the official synopsis below.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

Tom Cruise is joined by a cast including Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television’s Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (TV’s American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson), Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond ), and Oscarยฎ winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator).

The creative team on this action-adventure event is led by director/producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan, who have been instrumental in growing some of the most successful franchises of the past several yearsโ€”with Kurtzman writing or producing entries in the Transformers, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible series, and Morgan being the narrative engineer of the Fast & Furious saga as it has experienced explosive growth from its third chapter on.
