I Can’t Wait For Lex Luthor’s Huge Power Upgrade in Superman: Man of Tomorrow

Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor will be getting a huge power upgrade in the next Superman movie of James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, Man of Tomorrow. 2025’s Superman introduced audiences to brand-new versions of the titular Man of Steel and his bald archenemy, with David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult perfectly bringing these foes’ long-running feud to life on the big-screen. While Superman ended with Lex Luthor’s defeat, he’s now set to return to action to oppose Superman once again โ€“ and he might be able to thanks to one major upgrade.

In a shock new announcement, James Gunn, David Corenswet, and Nicholas Hoult have confirmed that they will all be returning to bring Man of Tomorrow to theaters on July 9, 2027. This announcement came with the release of specially-designed comic-style art depicting Corenswet’s Superman and Hoult’s Lex Luthor, confirming their feud will continue, even though Gunn has repeatedly stated this won’t be an honest-to-goodness Superman 2. Man of Tomorrow being included in the DCU is very exciting, and will advance Luthor’s storyline and influence in one major way.

Man of Tomorrow Will Debut Lex Luthor’s Warsuit

The comic-style art created for DC Studios’ Man of Tomorrow announcement, drawn by DC Comics artist Jim Lee, depicts Superman in his vivid blue outfit and red trunks and Lex Luthor in an outfit we haven’t yet seen in live-action. The art depicts Luthor in his green and purple warsuit that grants him increased strength and evens the playing field when battling Superman in DC Comics. The live-action debut of this warsuit will be a sight to behold, and will make Nicholas Hoult’s twisted antagonist even more terrifying.

We first saw Lex Luthor’s warsuit, officially known as the LexCorp Battlesuit or Sentinel-One, in 1983’s Action Comics #544. Luthor first found this alien battle armor on the planet of Lexor, where Luthor had become the leader of an extraterrestrial civilization. Later, in 1986’s The Man of Steel #5, the suit is a LexCorp prototype armor that Superman fights, similar to the Hammer of Boravia suit in 2025’s Superman donned by Ultraman. The iconic green and purple warsuit was found by Luthor on Apokolips in 2004’s Superman/Batman #5, and was later revealed to be a modified Kryptonian Warsuit.

Lex Luthor’s use of the warsuit in DC Comics made him much more capable of battling Superman in hand-to-hand combat. It offered Luthor enhanced strength, increased durability, flight capabilities, energy projection, and the safety net of a force-field, which is strong enough to defend against even Superman god-like power. If the warsuit offers Luthor the same power in the DCU’s Man of Tomorrow movie in 2027, the battle between Superman and his corporate archenemy will be unlike anything we’ve seen before.

Man of Tomorrow May Be Focused More on Lex Luthor Rather Than Superman

James Gunn has stated that, while David Corenswet’s Superman will have a key role in Man of Tomorrow, the movie will not be a direct sequel to the Man of Steel’s 2025 debut. Instead, it’s possible that Man of Tomorrow could be more focused on Lex Luthor, with Nicholas Hoult taking the lead. The introduction of the warsuit could hint at this indeed being the case โ€“ Luthor’s acquiring of the suit in DC Comics is an adventure in and of itself, while using the suit could see him become the DCU’s newest most powerful villain.

We don’t yet know much about Lex Luthor in the rebooted DCU, as he was a pretty straightforward villain in Superman. He sought to bring down Superman in an effort to prove himself, while striking a deal with the President of Boravia to claim some of the invaded Jarhanpur for himself. His backstory โ€“ perhaps one connected to Clark Kent โ€“ and his true motivations haven’t been revealed, but Man of Tomorrow could show us more of Lex Luthor’s history prior to Superman, while also marking his escape from the Belle Reve prison.

Introducing the warsuit would be a fantastic way to put more attention on Lex Luthor in Man of Tomorrow, while also developing Superman’s own story and timeline in the DCU. Isabela Merced and Aaron Pierre may have also teased their involvement in the upcoming movie as Hawkgirl and John Stewart’s Green Lantern, respectively. It’s unclear exactly what story will unfold in Man of Tomorrow, but the announcement of the project and confirmation of its July 9, 2027, release date have raised anticipation.
