Will Sony Pictures actually beat Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. to releasing a big budget female superhero film? According to Deadline, Sony Pictures is doing a revamp of it's Spider-Man franchise, which will include a female superhero movie set in the Spider-Man universe to be released in 2017.

Recently, Sony announced that they were pushing back The Amazing Spider-Man 3 from 2016 to 2018, and it looks like they plan to release a number of other Spider-Man universe spinoffs in the mean time.

Sinister Six has already been announced for a November 11, 2016 release date, and a Venom movie was already known to be in the works as well. However, the female superhero spinoff from the Spider-Man universe is somewhat of a surprise.

It's unknown exactly which female superhero will be the focus of the film. Possible characters listed by Deadline include Silver Sable, Black Cat, Stunner, Firestarter and Spider-Woman (although other sources have reported that Spider-Woman's rights are tied up at Marvel Studios since she is not really part of the Spider-Man family). Lisa Joy Nolan (Westworld) has reportedly been hired to write the script, and Arad and Tolmach are reportedly producing.
