During an interview yesterday with The Kevin McCarthy Show (embedded below), Iron Man trilogy star Gwyneth Paltrow revealed that following the third movie--out tonight in the U.K. and next week in the U.S.--she believes that she and Robert Downey, Jr. may be done with the franchise. Asked about the possibility of sequels, she said simply, "I don't think there's going to be one. I think we're done with Iron Man." Of course, this will raise some eyebrows, since neither Paltrow nor Downey are signed for any more movies after Iron Man 3 yet. While it's widely believed that Downey will sign on, and Paltrow has hinted that she'd be willing to do more if Downey does, it's interesting that this is the first time she's said point blank that she doesn't believe it will end up happening. Whether this is a change of philosophy, or any indication of insider knowledge, is impossible to say. Director Shane Black has always talked about Iron Man 3 as a film that would close out an arc for Tony Stark and company, clearing the deck of themes introduced in the first two films and positioning the characters for the future. With no Iron Man 4 planned for Marvel's Phase II, some fans have speculated that if there's no movie in Phase III, it might be difficult to bring back Downey at all (beyond maybe Avengers 2).
