Speaking to Comic Heroes magazine (via GamesRadar), legendary Batman scribe Grant Morrison revealed that Leto reached out to him for tips on playing the “Clown Prince of Crime.” His suggestions related not just to performance, but to the character’s appearance as well.

“It looks quite interesting.” Morrison said. “He [Leto] called me to talk about his approach to the character and I steered him in a few directions. I’m keen to see if anything other than slicked back hair and the Marilyn Manson vibe made it into his performance.”

Morrison first wrote the Joker for his blockbuster Batman graphic novel Arkham Asylum, with artist Dave McKean. He later returned to the Joker during his epic run on Batman, Batman & Robin, and Batman Incorporated, reimagining the villain with a persona he dubbed “the clown at midnight.”
