Beloved anthropomorphic marmalade-loving Paddington Bear has wandered to a new streaming home. Based on Michael Bond’s 1958 book A Bear Called Paddington and directed by Paul King, 2014’s Paddington was an overwhelming success and spurred two additional films. Unfortunately for fans, the family-friendly movie disappeared from streaming last year. But in the ever-evolving streaming landscape, where movies and TV shows come and go on a monthly basis, Paddington has finally returned to streaming in September 2025.

Paddington follows the adventures of the titular bear after he migrates from the jungles of “Darkest Peru” to London, where he finds shelter with the Brown family and must evade a taxidermist who has his eyes on him. The film previously streamed on Netflix but disappeared from the platform last year before reappearing in Netflix’s streaming library on September 1st. Paddington is now streaming on Netflix alongside the film series’ most recent installment, 2024’s Paddington in Peru. 2017’s Paddington 2 is not available on any major streaming platform but is available to rent or buy online. Ben Whishaw voices Paddington throughout the film series, with Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, and Nicole Kidman also starring in the first film.
Why You Should Watch Paddington
Other book-to-screen adaptations like 2003’s The Cat in the Hat and 2007’s The Golden Compass failed to live up to the source material, but Paddington is a great and massively successful adaptation of a beloved children’s book that manages to capture the charm and warmth of Bond’s story. A feel-good and engaging experience for all ages that also offers some nostalgia for those who grew up with the character, Paddington offers a perfect blend of a humorous and heartwarming story supported by a great score, stunning visuals, and stellar performances from the cast. Wishaw is a perfect fit for Paddington, and Kidman portrays a convincing villain.
Paddington was a success in every sense of the word. The movie grossed $268 million worldwide on a $55 million budget, and the franchise as a whole is overwhelmingly critic-approved. The flagship film is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with a 96% critics’ score. It holds an 81% audience approval rating. Its two sequels also earned the “Certified Fresh” distinction. The film is streaming on Netflix amid buzz about Paddington’s future, with reports surfacing last year that a fourth film and a TV series are allegedly in the works.
Other Family-Friendly Movies Now on Netflix
Netflix’s September 2025 streaming lineup has brought several family-friendly titles to the catalog, including two film adaptations of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, 1971’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The beloved 1982 classic E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is also now streaming on Netflix.
Most exciting among Netflix’s new family-friendly streaming options is the Shrek franchise. All four Shrek movies – Shrek, Shrek 2, Shrek Forever After, and Shrek the Third – began streaming on September 1st. The spin-off movie Puss in Boots also joined the streaming catalog, meaning subscribers can view almost the complete Shrek franchise other than 2022’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
