Fred Dekkerโs 1987 box office flop-turned-cult classic horror comedy The Monster Squad started streaming on Paramount+ on September 1st. The movie brings classic Universal Monsters creatures back to the screen as Dracula, in search of an ancient amulet that will grant him control over the world, assembles a squad of monsters including the Mummy, the Wolf Man, the Gill Man, and Frankenstein’s Monster. A ragtag group of young monster-obsessed misfits devoted to protecting their suburban neighborhood are the only ones who can save the day.
Why You Should Watch The Monster Squad
Itโs not untruthful to say that The Monster Squad was a complete flop upon its release in 1987. The movie only grossed a measly $3.8 million against a budget of $14 million, possibly a result of poor marketing and a confusing release window, and it received little love from critics and audience members. However, in the decades since its release, the movie has gained a new appreciation and become a cult classic, and itโs one that you wonโt want to miss this Halloween season.
At its core, The Monster Squad is a love letter to Universal Monsters that brings the iconic creatures that have terrified audiences for generations into an entertaining โ80s adventure with great practical monster effects by Stan Winston. The movie is a perfect blend of horror and comedy wrapped into an endearing coming-of-age story centered on a group of characters you canโt help but root for. Extremely fun and nostalgic with a great โ80s soundtrack, The Monster Squad is an overall great gateway horror movie that older children and adults alike can enjoy. Although the movie only holds a 56% criticsโ score on Rotten Tomatoes, it has been well-received by viewers with a 78% Popcornmeter rating.
Other Horror Movies Now on Paramount+
The Monster Squad is one of several horror titles that arrived to the Paramount+ streaming library on September 1st, and one of several that even younger audiences can enjoy. Both The Addams Family and Addams Family Values are also now streaming on Paramount+ and are great watches for the entire family.
Thereโs also no shortage of options for those looking for more intense scares. I Know What You Did Last Summer, several Friday the 13th films, The Crow, The Last Exorcism Part II, and The Ring were all recently added to the platform as part of the streamerโs September 2025 content lineup.
