The Simpsons Movie is coming back for a sequel 20 years after the release of the original thanks to a shocking new announcement. The Simpsons has officially kicked off Season 37 of its run with Fox this weekend, and it’s the first season in a massive four season renewal with Fox as part of a new effort to support their adult animated hits. But there has been one thing that fans of the series have been hoping to get for a long time. Because while it’s good to see new episodes, it’s a lot different from getting a feature film take on it all.

That’s all changing as The Simpsons Movie has officially announced that there’s a new sequel now in the works. Hitting theaters in July 23, 2027, this new The Simpsons Movie will be releasing pretty much exactly 20 years from the release of the first movie. There unfortunately has been very little revealed about what to expect from the movie as of the time of this writing, but the announcement has been accompanied with the first look poster for the new sequel. Check it out below.
The Simpsons Movie Returns With New Sequel 20 Years Later

The Simpsons Movie crossed over a very unfortunate milestone earlier this Spring. It was pointed out by fans that as of March 5th, we were then as far away fromย The Simpsons Movieโs premiere on July 27, 2007 as the movie was from the release ofย The Simpsonsโ very first episode on December 27th, 1989. This was already clocking in at nearly 6,500 days, and now that number is even higher. But when this new movie finally does hit theaters, it’s going to be 20 years since that original film’s debut. It just feels unreal.
The Simpsons Movie was already kind of a miracle in its own right as the team behind it all was working on the new film pretty much at the same time as they were producing new episodes of the series. This is something that series creator Matt Groening has mentioned over the years, and those behind the scenes have even pointed to that schedule as part of the reason why tackling a new film seemed to be such a bad idea at times. The fact that it’s finally happening as the series itself gets ready for Season 40 really all feels like it’s coming into place.
Why Did It Take So Long for a New Simpsons Movie?

The first movie killed us,” saidย The Simpsonsย creator Matt Groening noted during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival earlier this Summer when asked about a new movie. “We donโt have a โB teamโ; we did the movie and continued doing the series at the same time.” Groening even mentioned that the team had a literal clock on the wall counting down towards the deadline, “We even had a countdown clock on the wall โ we called itย The Simpsonsย death clock โ counting down the months, weeks, days, seconds til we had to have the movie finished. And it made us break down…So in a perfect world, we would do [another] movie. Weโll see.”
It seems that it’s all actually lined up to the point that The Simpsons Movie can be possible, and we’ll see it coming to fruition in two more years. With all of that in mind, a 20 year development cycle for the new film does make some sense. That first film was one of the best new releases for the franchise at that time, so hopefully we have another winner here.
