is tracking for an opening weekend gross in the range of $95 million, according to the Wrap. That puts it pretty close to the record-breaking April opening of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which took in $96 million in its first weekend at the box office. The first weekend in May is traditionally the start of the summer blockbuster season – though Captain America: The Winter Soldier got things going early this year – with superhero films like The Avengers and Iron Man typically opening on that weekend. While The Amazing Spider-Man 2 likely won't come close the numbers put up by The Avengers or Iron Man 3, it is set to easily surpass its predecessor, the original Amazing Spider-Man, at the box office. The Amazing Spider-Man took in $752 million at the worldwide box office. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a key film for Sony Picture, which is banking on the film setting up the Spider-Man franchise to become its own mutli-film universe, similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sinister Six and Venom films are already being planned, with Drew Goddard set to direct the former. We heard earlier today that the two spinoffs will show up in theaters before The Amazing Spider-Man 4 and will feature a lot of crossover with The Amazing Spider-Man 3. We've always known that Spider-Man's most important conflict has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that his greatest battle is about to begin. It's great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there's no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: Oscorp. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is directed by Marc Webb and produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach from a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & Jeff Pinkner, based on the Marvel Comics character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 comes to theaters May 2.
