While the Dark Knight rose first with a prologue before Christmas and The Avengers scored big during the Super Bowl, this past week The Amazing Spider-Man struck back. Ever since The Amazing Spider-Man was first announced, Sony has been facing an uphill battle to convince fans that this is not just the same Spider-Man origin story from the first movie being retold. Sony's marketing material has heavily focused on the concept of "The Untold Story," but many fans were still skeptical. Finally, Sony seems to have realized that if you can't convince fans by telling them, then maybe it's time to show them. On Monday, Sony held sneak preview events for the upcoming movie in major cities around the world. On Tuesday, Sony released a brand new trailer to the entire world online. Fans who were lucky enough to get passes to the sneak preview event were treated to a new Amazing Spider-Man 3-D trailer, live feeds of a question and answer session with the director and cast members, and about ten minutes worth of 2-D footage from the movie. In some locations, the director or cast members appeared at the screenings. Andrew Garfield appeared in New York City, Emma Stone appeared in Rio de Janeiro, Rhys Ifans appeared in London, and director Marc Webb appeared in Los Angeles. By virtually all accounts, The Amazing Spider-Man sneak preview event turned into a homerun for Sony. Online reviews of the footage have been overwhelmingly positive, and some attendees have gone as far as to call the 3-D effects the best they've seen since Avatar. Of course, it's easy for fans to get hyped up at a special event, so there was still the question of what everyone else would think once the new trailer was released online.

Even without being able to see the 3-D effects, the new Amazing Spider-Man trailer appears to also be a hit online. Sony wasn't kidding, when they claimed that Amazing Spider-Man is a very different Spider-Man movie from what has come before. There is a new girlfriend, a new villain, and even a different overall feel. From calling it pretty sweet to impressive, online critics are raving over the trailer. Our own Russ Burlingame even compiled a list of the Top Ten Things To Love About The Amazing Spider-Man trailer. As someone who enjoyed the first series of movies, I actually thinking this new series looks like it will be even better. This was truly the week that the Amazing Spider-Man emerged out of the shadow of the other big summer comic book movies. It's going to be one expensive summer at the movies for comic book fans, but one quite enjoyable summer as well. The Amazing Spider-Man is scheduled to premiere in theaters in the United States on July 3, 2012.
