This article contains spoilers from the past two episodes of Game of Thrones.

In this Sunday's episode, "Blood of My Blood," Ned Stark's brother and the former Night's Watch First Ranger, Benjen Stark (Joseph Mawle), arrived in the nick of time to save Meera and his nephew, Bran, from the army of the dead. The character, who appeared in the pilot and as a younger version in a flashback, was long thought dead, which he kind of is.

As we learned, Benjen was almost turned by the White Walkers, but the process was stopped by the Children of the Forest when one of them plunged a shard of dragonglass into his heart. And since the process was stopped and not reversed, he's forever left disfigured and frostbitten.

Okay, so why am I mentioning this in an article about Hodor? Because the last time we saw that gentle giant alive, he was valiantly holding the door shut as the wights tore at him. So, some fans have speculated that Hodor could come back in a couple of ways. One, we could see him as a member of the army of the dead. Or, perhaps one of the Children of the Forest survived the attack at the cave and was able to save Hodor like they did with Benjen.

Entertainment Weekly chatted with the show's co-executive producer Bryan Cogman and asked him if the fan reaction to Hodor's death was surprising and if there's a chance the big lug could return.

"I can't speak for [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss], but I figured the Hodor sequence would get this kind of reaction," Cogman said. "First, simply because the character is so beloved by the fans. And second because the sequence moves the story and mythology into such a new and mind-bending direction. I'm very pleased that it's been so well received. I watch the show every week in a screening room with a bunch of friends and it was pretty thrilling gauging their reactions throughout the sequence. As for whether or not we'll see Hodor again… As you know, I can't comment on anything that may or may not happen in the future."

Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
