Things were moving along very quietly for Mission: Impossible 5 until January. That is when Paramount decided to move the release date up from December to July. Which is usually a very good sign of confidence. But then a few weeks ago, sources for The Hollywood Reporter  told them that the film's ending was "unsatisfactory," and director Christopher McQuarrie was halting production to rework it. That's not usually a good sign.

So now some people are wondering if the film is in as good of shape as once thought. Perhaps that is why director Christopher McQuarrie decided to hold an impromptu question and answer session yesterday on Twitter. You know, to clear the air.

During the session he answered lots of questions. Let's begin with McQuarrie addressing rumors about the film's ending. Did he really have to reshoot it? McQuarrie replied, "No. We had to prep it. Shooting it now." And then later today he added, "We are constantly rewriting and have been since day one. Not unusual. Story was a reach."

Here's some more information that he divulged:

  • Composer Joe Kraemer ("Jack Reacher") "is playing with something retro" for the film's score.
  • He promises that the first trailer and the film's official title are "coming soon."
  • Paula Patton didn't reprise her Jane Carter role from Ghost Protocol nor did Maggie Q reprise her Zhen Lei role from Mission Impossible III because both were"unavailable."
  • When McQuarrie began he was aiming for the same sense of humor/fun as Ghost Protocol, but Mission: Impossible 5 has a "life of its own and goes where it wants."
  • He says Jeremy Renner's Agent William Brandt and Ving Rhames' Luther Stickell will both have more screentime than they did in Ghost Protocol.
  • As for Simon Pegg's IMF technical field agent Benji Dunn, McQuarrie says, "Benji gets his hands plenty dirty."

Mission: Impossible 5 will be released on July 31, 2015.
