The New Supergirl Trailer: Five Big Takeaways
Tonight's Supergirl trailer gave fans a bunch of new footage to mull over, with some new [...]
The villains are here
On the left, you've got Hellgrammite.
In the comics, he was an entymologist who treated himself with a serum that ultimately mutated his body horribly. Many of his stories in the comics -- especially during the pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths stories -- involved essentially conscripting people to be his servants by transforming them into smaller, weaker versions of himself; a parasitic or somehow venomous power set certainly doesn't seem like it would feel out of place with that gaping, ugly maw.
On the right,Reactron.
It's definitely not the shining, gold, totally finished look of Reactron from the comics. This guy looks more like somebody who either just got their powers, or who has been living underground for a while and had to cobble together a suit.
His powers, though, seen in action throughout the trailer, are admittedly pretty impressive. In the comics, he self-identifies as a "living reactor" and has squared off against Supergirl, Power Girl and the Doom Patrol (with whom he has a history, having served in the military with one of their members).
Supergirl's powers
In the pilot, Supergirl used a handful of her powers, but not everything.
In the trailer, we see a little bit more: super breath and super-hearing both make brief appearances, suggesting that this might be a bit more well-rounded than just "strong girl who can shoot lasers from her eyes."
And, yeah. Super-breath is hard to do without descending into silliness, so absolutely it's good to se them rolling the dice on that. If there's anything Berlanti, Kreisberg and Johns should have learned from The Flash it's that if you make the characters believable and relatable, the audience will buy the superhero stuff.
Cat Grant has terrible taste in men.
In the comics, Cat Grant married a guy who wasn't actually all that bad...but he was kind of neglectful, and used his money to manipulate the courts into giving him full custody when he and Grant split.
Shortly after she was introduced to the audience, Cat started dating Morgan Edge, the head of a massive criminal enterprise known as Intergang (it was later revealed she was only with him so she and Clark Kent could bring down Intergang with an expose).
And now we see her dancing with this handsome gentleman in the ad. Surely he can't be all bad, right?
Well, it's Maxwell Lord, who of course will be a bad guy because there's basiclaly no way Warner Bros. will go with the bwa-ha-ha version instead of the Infinite Crisis version of the character. Watch out for him, Cat -- especially when he has your son on his weird plane of the future later.
Team Supergirl
"You told him?!"
Yeah, it's a silly moment, but more than that, it seems this is the story beat where Team Supergirl starts to come together.
Like The Flash and Arrow, Kara needs people to ground her and provide her support...and who better than the two guys who already know her secret?
Err, spoilers.
Jimmy's (Signal?) Watch
In this day and age, is it unusual for a person to be wearing a large, fairly conspicuous watch?
Well, probably. After all, it's not like you can't just get your time off your cell phone.
Then again, this is James Olsen, so I'm wondering: Is that his famed signal watch? Will we see him be able ot attract Kryptonian attention with that bad boy?
