Marvel Comics ReEvolution

DC Comics had the New 52, which was known as the DC Comics Relaunch. Now, Marvel Comics has the ReEvolution, but instead of being a relaunch of their superhero characters, it's more of a relaunch of the way people read comics. On Sunday, Comicbook.com brought you some of the information about the digital only titles and augmented reality app that Marvel revealed at SXSW. Marvel Comics is billing the Marvel ReEvolution as something that will bring the worlds of print and digital media together in a new comics experience. The first comic to feature both the new comic book format and the augmented reality app will be none other than Avengers Vs. X-Men #1, which is being released on April 4. Avengers Vs. X-Men #1 Infinite, a tie-in story involving Nova, will be free with a redemption code found in print copies of Avengers Vs. X-Men #1 and also available for purchase on the Marvel comics app. With the Marvel AR app, powered by Aurasma, fans will be able to scan select Marvel products featuring the Marvel AR logo and unlock exclusive content. Fans might get to see pencil art, hear from creators, see 3-D extras, or catch up on past events. The digital only comics part of Marvel Comics ReEvolution seems like a logical move, as other publishers have already been doing this. Augmented reality has definitely been a buzzword of late with many claiming that it's the next big thing. Other people think augmented reality is just a gimmick that will never gain any real traction. If augmented reality were to catch on though, comic books seems like a medium where it could have the most possibilities. It certainly gives people something to talk about, and since it's being included as basically a free extra, it can't hurt. Only time will tell if the Marvel ReEvolution become a quickly forgotten gimmick or truly changes the way that people read comic books.
