The fate of the Star Trek reboot movie series remains in question following the announcement of a sequel to Star Trek Beyond. There have been no further announcements about the upcoming film since then, so optimistic fans have been forced to take a “no news is good news” perspective.

It’s the same perspective that star Zachary Quinto is taking about the film himself, as he tells Entertainment Tonight that he hasn’t heard anything new about the project.

“If I had [an update] I would give it to you,” Quinto says. “I’m expecting [the news of a fourth movie] to be true, but it’s always this way. It’s like, ‘Yes, we’re going to do it!’ but then there’s always a process — writing a script being primary among them — and I know that’s what they’re working on now. I think we’re all really excited to go back and we’ll do that whenever the phone rings and it’s J.J. on the other end.”

The fourth Star Trek reboot movie was announced in 2016, but that was before Star Trek Beyond‘s disappointing box office total was tallied. Star Trek Beyond opened $59.2 million, over $10 million less than Star Trek Into Darkness, and earned a total of $158.8 million during its domestic theatrical run, nearly $100 million less than the first Star Trek reboot movie in 2009.

Star Trek 4 was said to feature the return of Chris Hemsworth as the father of Captain James T. Kirk.

Star Trek Beyond currently has a 76.94 ComicBook.com Composite Score and a 4.04 ComicBook.com User Rating. Once you’ve streamed the movie on Hulu or Amazon Prime, be sure to come back and give Star Trek Beyond your own personal ComicBook.com User Rating below.

In Star Trek Beyond, a surprise attack in outer space forces the Enterprise to crash-land on a mysterious world. The assault came from Krall (Idris Elba), a lizard-like dictator who derives his energy by sucking the life out of his victims. Krall needs an ancient and valuable artifact that’s aboard the badly damaged starship. Left stranded in a rugged wilderness, Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the rest of the crew must now battle a deadly alien race while trying to find a way off their hostile planet.

Star Trek Beyond was directed by Justin Lin from a screenplay by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, inspired by Star Trek: The Original Series, which was created by Gene Roddenberry.

In Star Trek Beyond, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto reprise their respective roles as Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock, along with Simon Pegg as Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott, Karl Urban as Lieutenant Commander Leonard McCoy, M.D., Zoe Saldana as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, John Cho as Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu, and Anton Yelchin as Ensign Pavel Chekov. Idris Elba plays the alien warlord Krall, Joe Taslim plays Krall’s second-in-command Manas, Lydia Wilson plays Krall’s scout Kalara, and Sofia Boutella as Jaylah, an alien scavenger.
