Now Star Wars: The Last Jedi will bring Luke Skywalker back into fold after he was missing for the entirety of The Force Awakens. Fans wondering why he was gone or where he went will finally get their answers in the new film, but actor Mark Hamill turned some heads when he spoke about the revelations.

Hamill previously stated that he disagreed with the direction that director Rian Johnson was taking Luke Skywalker in. Hamill has had a lot of ideas about what this new sequel should feature, including a moment where the original trio of Han, Luke, and Leia finally reunite.

Variety caught up with Hamill on the red carpet at the Tony Awards and clarified his comments about the “disagreement.”

“I got into trouble becauseโ€ฆ I was quoted as saying to Rian that I fundamentally disagree with everything you decided about Luke, and it was inartfully [sic] phrased,” Hamill said. “What I was, was surprised at how he saw Luke. And it took me a while to get around to his way of thinking, but once I was there it was a thrilling experience. I hope it will be for the audience too.”

Hamill said he had not yet seen the full movie, but expressed confidence in the director.

“Rian Johnson is an amazing filmmaker,” Hamill said. “And if you look at Brick, or Brothers Bloom, or Looper, each film is different from the last one and they’re so inventive. And I think people will be pleased and surprised, I know I was.”

We’ll finally get to learn what Luke says to Rey after that long silence in the closing moments of the last movie when Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters December 15.
