Carrie Fisher was an icon of Hollywood, known for her writing as well as her acting, but no one would argue that she was most recognizable as Princess Leia Organa in the original Star Wars trilogy.

With Fisher’s passing today, George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars and Princess Leia, issued a statement of remembrance.
“Carrie and I have been friends most of our adult lives,” Lucas said in the statement. “She was extremely smart; a talented actress, writer and comedienne with a very colorful personality that everyone loved. In Star Wars she was our great and powerful princess – feisty, wise and full of hope in a role that was more difficult than most people might think. My heart and prayers are with Billie, Debbie and all Carrie’s family, friends and fans. She will be missed by all.”
Fisher suffered a heart attack while on a flight from London to Los Angeles. Another flight passenger administered CPR to Fisher. Once the plane landed, Fisher was immediately rushed to a hospital.
Upon arriving at the hospital, Fisher’s condition was said to be “not good.” Fisher’s brother has released periodic updates on his sister’s status. Fisher was reportedly stable for a time, then moved to the hospital’s intensive care unit. She finally passed away this morning.
Fisher starred as Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy and reprised her role as Leia, now a General of the Resistance, in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Fisher’s final performance as Leia will be seen in Star Wars: Episode VIII in 2017.
