Assassin's Creed is featured front-and-center in this week's Entertainment Weekly magazine, and along with closer looks at the weapons and costumes of the film, they take a look at the characters, as well. While they didn't spill any details as to whom we'd be seeing, weapon designer Tim Wildgoose did confirm that some of the weapons, as in the full design and detail, come straight out of the games, and that they are used by the characters that wielded them there.

"At the same time, there are assassins from the games in the film as well. In some case, we could directly copy the Ubisoft weapons onto their characters," Wildgoose said. "There's basically a few assassins taken straight from the games, who we get to see in the films. We actually get to use some of the real game weapons in there."

Now don't expect to see the main playable characters from the games showing up, as he confirmed they (like Altair or Ezio) won't be the ones to appear; think more supporting staff and some of the other Assassins you run into and learn from. "They're very famous characters that the fans will probably enjoy," Wildgoose assures. It's hard to place exactly who could show up, though, since this film takes place in the 15th century - uncharted territory for the games.

Of course, Wildgoose didn't say they'd be Assassins in one of the historical settings; when you open it up to the present-day era, that gives us several more possibilities. Jeremy Irons' character, Abstergo CEO Alan Rikkin, comes directly from the games in the present day timeline, after all. There's always the possibility that, like several of the games, we'll see a brief flash of another time, too.

Assassin's Creed is in theaters December 21, 2016. It stars Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch and his own ancestor the Assassin Aguilar, who operated during the time of the Spanish Inquisition (nobody expected that!). Filmed largely on location by director Justin Kurzel, the movie takes place in the same world as the games, but tells a new story within that world rather than adapting one of them.
