Deborah Snyder Explains Why Zack's Superman Is More Relatable

Ever since DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths-fueled reboot The Man of Steel (and probably before that), the publisher (and its parent company, Warner Bros.) have been trying to convince audiences that Superman isn't too much a god to be relatable.
Whether it's throttling his powers, focusing on his relationships, or making him doubt himself, films like Superman Returns and TV series like Smallville have taken Superman away from being the perfect "big blue boy scout" and made him somebody the audience can relate to, rather than something they can aspire to.
There are arguments to be made for and against this approach, but what's not up for discussion is the fact that Zack Snyder continued that philosophy in his movies Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Now, Snyder's wife and fellow executive producer, Deborah Snyder, has explained to Forbes just what about her husband's Superman is meant to make audiences feel for him.
"And it's all so human, right? It's about these journeys. I mean, Zack really loves Joseph Campbell and the hero's journey," Snyder said. "And these characters are just so mythic, and their journeys– I always say they're journeys are what we can relate to. Because we can't relate to their powers, so what do you have? That's the great thing about our Superman. He is more relatable. Someone said, 'It's so dark,' and I go, 'Well, is it dark? He's going through real problems that we go through as people every day.' To me that's not dark, that's life. We're complicated people. And we're making him in that way more relatable."
Of course, as they're doing that, they're also exploring the aspect of Superman being viewed by others as a god, and the ways that he's not totally human -- something that can create some confusion, especially when every threat he's faced so far has had at least a tint of Kryptonian menace.
