Marvel Studios has reportedly narrowed its search for a director for Captain Marvel. The shortlist is said to be comprised of Niki Caro, Lesli Lanka Glatter, and Lorene Scafaria, though others may also be on the list and unnamed. Despite the shortlist, Marvel Studios is said to be taking its time making a final decision.

Caro is the director fo the Academy Award-nominated 2002 film Whale Rider. She also directed North Country, McFarland, USA, and the yet-to-be-released The Zookeeper's Wife.

Glatter is a television director who was the main director for Showtime's Homeland. Other credits include episodes of Ray Donovan, The Newsroom, True Blood, Mad Men, ER, and The West Wing.

Sacfaria comes from an indie background. Her first writing credit was Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist. She then wrote and made her directorial debut with Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. She also wrote and directed The Meddler.

According to THR's report, Marvel Studios is moving onto the next phase of the search. The new phase involves handing the contenders a treatment for the movie and having them construct a detailed presentation.

These three names come from a shortlist that at one point also included The Babadook director Jennifer Kent and Kung Fu Panda 2 director Jennifer Yuh. Marvel has determined that they want a female director for their first female-led film.

Brie Larson will star in Captain Marvel as Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot turned superhero. In the Marvel Comics universe, Carol's powers were gained after an encounter with a member of the Kree, but we already know that Captain Marvel's origin is being tweaked for the big screen. Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) wrote the script.

Check out when Captain Marvel and other movies are coming out in ComicBook.com's Movie Release Schedule.
