When Marvel introduces fans to the sorcerer supreme Doctor Strange later this year, it will introduce the world of magic into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before Strange can get there though, he has to go on a journey to find a better version of himself.

In a new featurette from the upcoming movie, star Benedict Cumberbatch outlines Strange's not so humble beginnings.

"Strange is incredibly arrogant, brilliant, sort of extraordinary and his need to control the fates, to control destiny and in particular death has brought him to the height of his profession as a neurosurgeon."

A last ditch effort is what eventually leads him to his destiny, and to the doorstep of the ancient one, played by actress Tilda Swinton.

"He has a car crash and he loses the use of his hands and he spends all his money on operations to have his hands put back together and they don't work. He spends his last pennies on a ticket and goes to Nepal. He finds the ancient one who is a sorcerer supreme "

It brings out this spiritual dimension which he never knew was possible" says Cumberbatch, "and he soon realizes his potential as someone who can help on a grander scale than he could have ever imagined actually existed."

Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City's Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.

The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen, Scott Adkins, Benedict Wong, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4th.
