While fleshing out the story for Mad Max: Fury Road (winner of 6 Academy Awards), director George Miller said he ended it up with enough material to make two additional films, but when promoting the film in May 2015, he wanted to make a small film that didn't rely on special effects before tackling another installment of Warner Bros.' Mad Max film franchise.

However, according to a "highly placed onset source" for the Herald Sun, pre-production on a new Mad Max film, which is said to be a prequel, titled Mad Max: The Wasteland, and being directed by Miller, is supposedly "gearing up" and "could start as soon as later this year."

Furthermore, filming will reportedly take place at the Broken Hill Film Studio, the fifth largest film studio in Australia. Interestingly enough, Fury Road was originally going to film at that studio, but when it rained in the Australian desert for the first time in 15 years, causing wildflowers to grow in the usually barren land, production headed to South West Africa, Namibia.

Okay. So, what's Mad Max: The Wasteland about? The Herald Sun says it will "focus on the backstory of Furiosa," the badass character Oscar-winner Charlize Theron portrayed. And since Hardy signed on for for multiple Mad Max films, he will appear as well.

Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max (Tom Hardy) believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa (Charlize Theron). They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.

Mad Max: Fury Road - Black & Chrome Edition and the Mad Max High Octane Collection (includes all four films in the franchise) go on sale December 6, 2016.
