Netflix Releases First Trailer for Obama Biopic: Barry

Now that Netflix has got a firm hold on the original television market, it looks like they're doubling down on their attempts at original movies as well.

Along with a slew of new movies arriving on the streaming platform in December, Netflix has announced the release of one of its more acclaimed efforts, Barry.

Along with this announcement, Netflix also released a full length trailer for the film.

Barry chronicles the college years of President Barack Obama, and the difficult times that helped mold him into the man he is today.

In 1981, Barack Obama headed to Columbia University in New York. The film shows the changes he goes through, how he grew to love the American people, and how he viewed diversity across the country. His experiences as a child of a mixed-race relationship gave Barack a unique perspective on race relations in the US.

Barack struggled to find his place in the world during college, as his mixed background kept him from fitting in most places. The trailer highlights his mentality as he faced this adversity, and how he wanted to be a bridge between both worlds.

Barry was written by Adam Mansbach and directed by Vikram Gandhi (Kumare, Vice). This is the first feature written by Mansbach, and Gandhi's first foray into a narrative feature. He served as a producer on Vice, and his first film, Kumare, was a documentary.

Devon Terrell, who has no other acting credits to his name, portrays the young Barack Obama. It looks like a great choice, as the actor looks just like his Presidential counterpart. The film also stars Ashley Judd, Ellar Coltrane, and Anya Taylor-Joy.

Barry premieres on Netflix December 16, 2016.
