Logan Director Wants To Take A Human Approach To Wolverine

From the first image teasing Old Man Logan, through the trailer, and (hopefully) continuing to the last frame of the film, Logan is positioning itself as the Wolverine movie fans have wanted since Hugh Jackman brought the character to the big screen in the 2000 production of X-Men.

There has already been gritty look into the movie tracked with Hurt by Johnny Cash, an R-Rating, and a steady pulse of images on the social media channels helping to build a groundswell of anticipation.

In a recent interview with Empire.com, Director James Mangold all-but confirmed what was anticipated, that this isn't going to be the typcial Wolverine movie.

"The goal was to make something human," Mangold said. "We made an effort to scale back on the gloss and greenscreen."

It was revealed as much in the leaked "Page 2" of the script, where he wrote: "if you're on the make for a hyper choreographed, gravity defying, city-block destroying CG fuckathon, this ain't your movie."

The film will take place in the year 2024 -- where mutant births have become extremely rare and the defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone -- and the only remains of the species are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan.

Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.

The film is set-up to be a darker superhero flick than its predecessor. Previous X-Men films have explored everything from apocalyptic future to self-righteous genocide, but Logan will separate itself by focusing on the grief which comes with age. And, of course, there will be plenty of bloodshed thanks to Logan and his adamantium claws.

Jackman echoed the sentiment of Mangold in the same interview, saying that setting the tone from the outset was the goal of the production.

"It's essential you see this as the story of a man who is struggling with mortality and legacy," he said. "Whether the world has been better off with him or without him."

Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice).

It hits theaters on March 3, 2017, followed by Deadpool 2 on January 12, 2018. Movie versions of Gambit, New Mutants and X-Force are still being developed.
