Anime Fans Reveal Their Favorite Transformations Ever

When you think of your favorite transformations in anime, where do you rank the likes of Sailor Moon and Eren Yeager? Japanese streaming site Docomo asks fans about their favorites and the results are sure to surprise you.

Japan's Docomo Anime Store polled its users and ranked their top ten transformations in anime as decided by men and women:

"Top 10 Anime Transformation for Boys!"

  1. Kill la Kill
  2. Yuki Yuna Is a Hero
  3. Accel World
  4. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
  5. Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096 (episode 3)
  6. Overlord (episode 9, others)
  7. Flip Flappers (episode 3, others)
  8. Senki Zesshō Symphogear
  9. Sword Art Online (episode 19, others)
  10. Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 2wei Herz!

"Top 10 Anime Transformation for Girls!"

  1. Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE!
  2. Sailor Moon
  3. Blue Exorcist (episode 2)
  4. Kill la Kill
  5. Macross Delta
  6. World Trigger (episode 1, episode 62, others)
  7. Card Captor Sakura (episode 45, others)
  8. Kamigami no Asobi (episode 1)
  9. Attack on Titan (episode 8)
  10. Ayakashi - Samurai Horror Tales (episode 11)

Breaking down the choices made here there are notable absences such as any transformation in Dragon Ball - as fans in the West would undoubtedly vote for any of the Super Saiyan transformations - Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac, or prolific mech anime like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Those major absences could be explained by Docomo not holding the streaming licenses for those shows. The site could have wanted its users to celebrate its properties in full.

While the poll results are limited to series titles, it's not hard to imagine why some series rank above others. Kill la Kill is a series full of Super Sentai-like transformations, so it's no wonder it ranks so highly with both men and women in Japan. It's more adult bend and Trigger's curvaceous character design also explains why it might rank higher for men than it does women.

The top spots in the Japanese men's poll are dominated by magical girl transformations with Yuki Yuna is a Hero, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Flip Flappers, and Senki Zessho Symphogear surprisingly ranking as high as they do.

Counter that to the women's top choices and you have the magical girl parody show featuring cute transforming boys, Cute High Earth Defense Club Love!, unsurprising legacy choices like Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura, and the more action heavy series in these lists like Blue Exorcist, World Trigger, and Attack on Titan.
