Sports fans that own a Nintendo Switch are already thrilled by the support of 2K Sports on the platform, what with both WWE 2K18 and NBA 2K18 making their way to the system this fall. But what some of them may not know is that 2K could very well have a hidden agenda for its forthcoming basketball sim.

The game's official product page in the Nintendo Store indicates that the forthcoming dunkfest will be compatible with Nintendo's line-up of Amiibo figurines. It's noted that the technology will be incorporated into the game somehow, but stops just short of listing how, exactly.

Now, this could mean one of two things. The first is that 2K Sports could be making a line-up of exclusive Amiibo figurines for the game, like a Steph Curry figure or something like that.

Or, and this is probably the more obvious choice, the game will be compatible with the Amiibo figures that are on the market, providing particular boosts to players in NBA 2K18, or, dare we dream, putting Mario into the on-court action. It wouldn't be the first time that the plumber has made his way to the sports scene in a dream crossover. Back on the Nintendo GameCube, Mario, alongside Peach and Luigi, appeared in two EA Sports Big titles – SSX On Tour and NBA Street V3.

Now, 2K Sports hasn't officially said anything about the Amiibo incorporation, so it could very well be an error, or something that the publisher has yet to pan out with Nintendo in terms of use. But we can only imagine the possibilities of getting better stats with a custom team, courtesy of a little help from our favorite plumber – or, for that matter, Bayonetta. We're pretty sure she can "ball" with the rest of the team like a pro.

We've got some time to see exactly what the game will do, since NBA 2K18 isn't due out for a few more weeks yet. But hopefully either 2K or Nintendo will come clean and give us an idea of just what we can expect from Switch-exclusive features for the game. It'd certainly sell more copies, that's for sure.

NBA 2K18 releases on September 19th for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC and Nintendo Switch, along with PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
