Director Doug Liman Reveals Why He Left The Gambit Movie

If you have been wondering how Gambit is going over at 20th Century Fox, then you are not the only curious one. Fans have been asking after the feature since news broke of its existence, but Gambit has had little to offer fans. Last year, news did break that the film finally got a director thanks to Doug Liman. But, by August, the deal seemed to have unraveled. Now, the director is opening up about his decision to leave the film, and the term 'creative differences' seems to sum the choice up.
Recently, Liman spoke with LRM about his decision to walk away from Gambit. At first, it was reported that the director left to pursue work on other films. Now, this is what Liman has to say about the ordeal:
"I'm all about the script, and I just wasn't feeling it," he confessed.
"I've gotta connect to the script. On Bourne Identity, Matt Damon was always referring to himself as a 'script whore,' and I'm with Matt on that. It's like, you feel the script, that's everything. We make movies because we want to tell great stories. The Wall started with a contest Amazon ran, and Dwain's script rose to the top, and then it got handed to me."
With Liman out of the picture, no word has been given about who 20th Century Fox about who will direct the feature. Still, that doesn't mean Gambit is necessarily in a bad place. Recently, X-Men producer Simon Kinberg spoke with ComicBook about the film and said its actively in development. And, yes - Channing Tatum is still on-board to play the Cajun mutant.
"It's in active development," Kinberg said. "It's a movie that we hope will be ready to go by the end of this year and shoot next year. We have two or three X-Men related movies this year so it can wait for a moment. The process has been that Channing [Tatum] is as determined about getting the character right as Ryan Reynolds was about Deadpool and Hugh [Jackman] was about this Logan movie. We know that when we get those right, the movie succeeds so we want to make sure we get Gambit right because we want him to be the beginning of a whole new franchise."
