At the time, Broadbent’s character had not been revealed and we speculated that going from retired Hogwarts professor to maester of the Citadel in Oldtown wouldn’t be much of a stretch. It turns out that we were onto something. Broadbent confirmed to ScreenCrush that he is indeed playing a Maester. “I’m a maester, an archmaester,” Broadbent said. “I’m an old professor character. I did five episodes. I did sort of one major scene in each episode.”
Broadbent also confirmed that he will be sharing scenes with John Bradley, who plays Sam Tarly. Fans will remember that Sam arrived at the Citadel in Oldtown, the headquarters of the Order of Maesters, seeking to become a maester himself and serve the Night’s Watch in that fashion. It seems that Broadbent is one of the maesters located at the Citadel.
Broadbent stopped short of confirming his character’s name, but fans who have read George R.R. Martin’s novels may infer that he is playing Archmaester Marywn. Marwyn is one of the few maester, and likely the only archmaester, who still believes in tales of magic and dragons. He’s spent his life studying such matters, which has earned him the nickname Marwyn the Mage.
In A Feast for Crows, Samwell fills in Marwyn on everything that has been going on in the North involving White Walkers. Marwyn then orders Sam to finish his studies and return to the Wall as quickly as possible while Marwyn himself leaves to meet with Daenerys Targaryen.
Marwyn may be the key character who finally brings the true threat in Game of Thrones: the Night King and his White Walker threat, to the forefront. His enlightenment may be what the various factions still struggling for control of Westeros need to unite against the coming darkness. Or not. You never really know for sure when it comes to Game of Thrones.
Game of Thrones Season 7 will air on HBO in the summer of 2017.
